SkyMiles is the loyalty program of Delta Air Lines and one of the most commercially valued in the industry. Delta earns and prices the program on revenue rather than distance. Members collect SkyMiles based on the fare they pay, roughly five miles per dollar for general members, and Delta redeems them at dynamic prices tied to the cash cost of the seat. There is no published award chart, which gives Delta full control of point pricing and liability.
Elite status, the Medallion program, runs Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Qualification is set entirely by Medallion Qualification Dollars, a spend-based metric, so status reflects revenue contribution rather than trips taken. SkyMiles also do not expire, removing a common source of member complaint.
The lesson for an enterprise operator is control. By untethering both earning and redemption from a fixed chart, Delta manages the value of its currency continuously and aligns rewards with margin. The trade is transparency: members cannot look up what an award costs in advance, and the program leans on trust in the brand. Operators considering dynamic value should weigh the liability control against the goodwill that a predictable, published chart preserves.
