MileagePlus is the loyalty program of United Airlines, launched in 1981 and now built around Star Alliance, the largest of the three global airline alliances. Members earn MileagePlus miles on United, Star Alliance carriers such as Lufthansa and ANA, and a broad card and retail base. United prices most awards dynamically, and its miles do not expire, which lowers the member anxiety that expiry policies create.
Premier status runs Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K. United qualifies members with two levers: Premier Qualifying Points, a revenue-based measure, and Premier Qualifying Flights, a segment count. A member can reach status through spend alone or through a mix of spend and flight frequency, which lets United reward both high-fare corporate flyers and frequent lower-fare travelers.
The lesson for an enterprise operator is the value of dual qualification paths. A single spend threshold rewards only the biggest spenders, while a single segment count rewards frequency regardless of value. Offering both, and letting members clear either, widens the pool of people who see status as attainable without diluting the revenue signal. It is a practical way to balance inclusivity against the need to tie recognition to commercial worth.
