Qantas Frequent Flyer, launched in 1987, is the loyalty program of Qantas and one of the most commercially important assets the airline owns. It splits its two currencies cleanly. Qantas Points are the spendable currency, earned on flying, credit cards, retail, insurance, health, and a deep roster of Australian everyday partners, and redeemed for flights, upgrades, and a large store of merchandise and gift cards. Status Credits are earned by flying Qantas, Jetstar, and partner airlines, including oneworld carriers and Emirates, and they decide status.

Status runs Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and the invitation-tier Platinum One, mapped to oneworld recognition. For most of the program's life the split was absolute: points could be earned almost anywhere, Status Credits only in the air. Qantas announced in February 2026 that it would open that wall, letting members earn up to 140 Status Credits a year from ten everyday categories such as Qantas-linked credit cards, retail partners, and utilities, and roll over up to half of their unused Status Credits. Both changes are due to launch later in 2026.

The lesson for an enterprise operator is that separating the reward currency from the status currency lets each do one job well, and that the wall between them is a dial rather than a fixed rule. For decades Qantas sold points to banks and retailers at scale, funding the program, without cheapening a status ladder anchored to flights. The 2026 change opens a capped channel for ground earning, 140 Status Credits against thresholds of 300 for Silver and 1,400 for Platinum, which widens access without handing status to anyone who simply spends. An operator borrowing this two-currency structure should treat the boundary as something to meter deliberately rather than defend absolutely.
