Walmart+ is the paid membership program of Walmart, launched in September 2020. It is a subscription built to counter membership-club retailers rather than a points-earning scheme.

Recurring membership fee, no traditional points currency

Walmart+ is a paid subscription rather than an earn-and-burn program. Members pay a recurring fee and receive free delivery on eligible orders, fuel discounts, in-store Scan and Go checkout, and bundled partner benefits such as streaming. The design answers the membership-club model directly, trading a periodic fee for convenience and savings instead of accruing a points balance.

The strategic logic is retention through commitment and habit. A household that has paid for delivery has a strong reason to consolidate spend at Walmart to justify the fee, which raises share of wallet and visit frequency. The bundled benefits, especially streaming, add perceived value that has little to do with groceries and widens the appeal beyond core shoppers.

The lesson for an enterprise operator is that paid membership converts loyalty from a rebate into a recurring revenue line and a psychological lock-in. Because the member has prepaid for access, the operator captures subscription income and a durable behavioral commitment up front, while still gathering the first-party data that a free program would, provided the benefit bundle stays clearly worth the fee.
