Overview

Best Buy reworked its membership in June 2023, its 10-K for fiscal 2024 says, so shoppers could pick a plan by need and budget. The result is three tiers. The free My Best Buy tier brings free standard shipping, order tracking and a saved purchase history. My Best Buy Plus adds free two-day shipping, member prices, access to member-only sales and a 60-day return window on most products. My Best Buy Total adds up to 24 months of Best Buy Protection or AppleCare+ on eligible purchases while the plan stays active. It also adds 24/7 tech support, 20% off repair labor and in-store and remote computer services such as virus removal, a $149.99 service included with Total.

Points come from paying, either for a plan or with the store card. Plus and Total members earn 0.5 points per $1 on qualifying purchases, which Best Buy calls 1% back. The My Best Buy Credit Card earns 2.5 points per $1, or 5%, but only when the buyer picks Standard Credit over a financing offer. A Plus or Total member who pays with the card gets both rates, for 6%. A free member without the card earns no points on purchases. Tax, leased goods and Best Buy items bought through outside sites such as Amazon or DoorDash earn nothing. Yardbird products earn card points but not plan points.

Every 250 points is worth a $5 reward certificate, so each point is worth 2 cents. Certificates usually expire 60 days after they are issued. Members can also trade points for e-gift cards from partner brands. For members without the card, Best Buy turns each 250 points into certificates on or around March 1 each year. Cardholders can instead bank points until they want them. An account closes if the member makes no qualifying purchase in a rolling 24 months and has no open card. A closed account has 90 days to use its points.

Citibank, N.A. issues the My Best Buy Credit Cards. The store card earns the 5% at Best Buy, and a new cardholder gets 10% back on the first day of card purchases within 14 days of opening. The My Best Buy Visa also earns outside the store. It pays 3% on gas and 2% on groceries, dining and takeout. Everything else on the Visa earns 1%. The card page says no annual fee, while its financing note lists an annual fee of $0 to $59 based on credit. Variable purchase APRs on the store card run from 27.99% to 30.99%.

Prices and rewards have moved since the 2023 relaunch. A Best Buy post on September 11, 2023 listed Plus at $49.99 and Total at $179.99. On June 4, 2026, Best Buy began paying points to Plus and Total members and listed updated prices of $29.99 and $199.99. The same post cited a finding that more than 80% of customers want to earn points at Best Buy. Paid membership was about 7 million at the end of fiscal 2024, and the 2025 proxy put it at nearly 8 million a year later. Best Buy's current program rules carry a revision date of September 25, 2026.

Points now go to Plus and Total members and to cardholders. A free member who wants points has to open the card. The card's 5% applies only when the buyer picks Standard Credit instead of a financing offer. For Plus, 1% back repays the $29.99 fee at about $3,000 of yearly spending ($29.99 divided by 1%). Best Buy's 2023 post described Total as built for customers who want protection and support. Since 2023, Plus has dropped by $20 and Total has risen by $20, which widens the gap between the paid tiers from $130 to $170.
