- Purpose
- Identify shoppers and drive store and app engagement
IKEA Family began as a free, discount-access program rather than a points scheme. Members receive member prices on selected products, targeted offers, and in-store perks, and for most of the program's life there was no earning currency at all: the benefit was direct price access, simple to understand and cheap to administer while still requiring identification to redeem.
That reasoning fit the category. Furniture is a low-frequency, high-consideration purchase, so a points balance that takes years to build would motivate few shoppers. IKEA has since decided the trade-off was worth revisiting. In May 2025 IKEA US launched points inside IKEA Family, earning one point per dollar and paying out at deliberately low thresholds: 65 points for free food in the restaurant, 175 for five dollars off a product, 350 for ten dollars off delivery. It also pays points for non-purchase actions such as creating a profile or logging in.
The lesson for an enterprise operator is that purchase frequency governs the mechanic, but it does not have to govern the currency. IKEA's answer to a slow furniture cycle was not to skip points, it was to price the rewards low enough and attach earning to the restaurant and to app behavior, so a balance moves between furniture purchases rather than sitting dormant. In infrequent categories, the currency works only if something other than the big-ticket purchase feeds it.
