Starbucks Rewards runs inside the Starbucks mobile app, which doubles as an order-ahead tool and a prepaid balance. Members load money, order and pay in the app, and earn Stars on qualifying spend, then redeem Stars for drinks, food, and merchandise. Routing purchases through an owned app and a stored-value balance gives Starbucks first-party transaction data on most member visits, plus the float that sits in prepaid balances.
On 10 March 2026 Starbucks reimagined the program around three levels. Green, Gold, and Reserve set the earn rate at 1, 1.2, and 1.7 Stars per dollar, with Gold requiring 500 Stars a year to hold and Reserve 2,500. That moved the accelerator from how a member pays to how much they buy: the old bonus for paying with a preloaded card gave way to Bonus Stars on digital reloads, and a new 60-Star rung buys two dollars off any item.
The design leans on frequency. Coffee is a daily-habit category, so the program rewards repeat visits rather than large baskets, and time-boxed Star promotions such as double-Star days and challenges nudge incremental trips. Order-ahead removes friction at the moment of purchase, which lifts visit and redemption rates together.
The lesson for an enterprise operator is that owning the transaction channel is what makes the loyalty economics work. Because members transact inside Starbucks' own app and prepaid wallet, the company captures identity and behavior on nearly every purchase, funds part of the reward pool from breakage and float, and can run targeted offers without depending on third-party point-of-sale data.
