Walgreens' program that replaced Balance Rewards in 2020, moving from points to a cash-value currency.

myWalgreens is the loyalty program of Walgreens, launched in November 2020 to replace Balance Rewards. Members earn Walgreens Cash rewards, a cash-value currency, on eligible purchases, with a higher rate on Walgreens-branded products. The switch retired the older points system in favor of a simpler cash-back structure.

myWalgreens replaced the older Balance Rewards points program in November 2020, swapping a points-per-dollar system for Walgreens Cash rewards, a currency expressed directly in cash value. Members earn a base rate on most purchases and a higher rate on Walgreens-branded products, then apply the balance to future purchases. Anchoring the higher rate to own-brand goods steers members toward Walgreens' most profitable inventory.

The replatform is the story. Moving from points, where members had to translate an abstract balance into value, to a cash-denominated reward removed a layer of mental math and made the benefit legible at the shelf. Tilting earn rates toward private label turned the currency into a margin tool as well as a retention tool.

The lesson for an enterprise operator is that a loyalty currency is a product decision that can be re-versioned. Walgreens judged that a simpler, cash-value reward would drive clearer perceived value than legacy points, and it accepted the cost of migrating an installed base to get there. Currency design, not just discount depth, is a lever operators can pull.
