- Independent hotels represented under a shared soft brand
I Prefer Hotel Rewards is the loyalty program of Preferred Hotels and Resorts, one of the largest brands of independent hotels. Membership is free. Members earn roughly ten I Prefer points per US dollar of eligible spend, with tier bonuses of 20 percent at Gold and 50 percent at Titanium, and redeem reward nights starting at 15,000 points or blend points and cash. The participating hotels are independently owned, not chain-managed, and use the program to offer a chain-like rewards proposition without giving up their independence.
This is the soft-brand model, and it is the same shared-currency logic that scales up to full ecosystems. A representation company gives unaffiliated hotels one loyalty currency and one member base to draw on, so an independent property can compete for repeat stays against the majors without building a program alone. The operator lesson is that a shared currency is a distribution tool as much as a retention tool. For independents, belonging to a common points economy converts a fragmented set of one-off hotels into something a member can accrue toward, which is exactly what a standalone independent cannot manufacture on its own.
