MyMcDonald's Rewards launched nationwide in July 2021 and was, notably, McDonald's first national loyalty program in the United States, arriving well after most large quick-service peers. The mechanic is deliberately simple: 100 points per dollar, earned only through the McDonald's app, redeemed across a short ladder of fixed tiers. The high nominal ratio is a framing choice, since a member sees hundreds of points from a single order and feels rapid progress toward a reward.
Two structural decisions stand out. Making the program app-only turned loyalty into a first-party data engine at national scale almost immediately, capturing identified purchase behavior that anonymous counter transactions never produced. Using a handful of fixed redemption tiers, rather than an open catalog, keeps the reward liability predictable and easy to forecast, because every redemption maps to one of a few known food costs.
That control cuts both ways, and McDonald's used it. On 4 May 2026 it repriced the ladder upward, moving items that cost 1,500 points to 2,000, 3,000 to 3,500, 4,500 to 5,000, and 6,000 to 7,000, and expanded from four tiers to six by adding a 4,000-point rung worth three dollars off an order. For an enterprise operator the lesson is that arriving late to loyalty is survivable if the launch is designed around data capture, and that fixed tiers are a repricing lever as much as a liability control. A short, legible ladder is easy for members to learn, which is exactly what makes a move up it easy for them to notice.
