ThankYou Rewards is Citi's points currency, earned across its cards and redeemable for travel, gift cards, or transfers into airline and hotel partners that reach all three major airline alliances. As with peer programs, the richest redemption, partner transfers, is gated to premium cards. Notably, Citi kept the ThankYou Points name and mechanics even as it rebranded its premium card line to the Strata family.
That continuity is the point. Rewrapping the cards while preserving the currency means members' existing balances and mental models carried over intact, avoiding the confusion and attrition a currency change would trigger. The program's alliance-spanning partner list also gives points broad utility across the airline world rather than tying value to a single carrier.
The lesson for an enterprise operator is to treat the loyalty currency as a stable asset even when the products around it change. Cards, names, and marketing can be refreshed, but the currency members have accumulated is a liability and a relationship that should persist. Citi refreshed the storefront and left the currency untouched, which is the low-risk way to modernize a program.
