Ultimate Rewards is Chase's points currency, earned across the Sapphire, Freedom, and Ink card families and redeemable for travel through the Chase Travel portal, for cash, or by transfer to a set of airline and hotel partners. A defining trait is that the same point is worth different amounts depending on which card the member holds, premium cards enable partner transfers and richer travel redemption, entry cards lean toward cash-like redemption. Chase retired its long-standing fixed portal rates in 2025, replacing the flat 1.5 cents for Sapphire Reserve and 1.25 for Sapphire Preferred with Points Boost, which lifts value on selected flights and hotels rather than across the whole portal.

That card-dependent value turns the currency into a ladder. A member who starts with a no-fee Freedom card can graduate to a premium Sapphire product and see the points they already hold become more valuable, which creates a built-in upgrade path inside one ecosystem. Chase Travel, as an owned booking channel, also captures margin and data on redemptions.

The lesson for an enterprise operator is that tiering redemption value by product held, rather than only earn rates, gives members a reason to trade up. The currency stays constant while its usefulness expands with the relationship, aligning the member's incentive to deepen engagement with the issuer's incentive to move them onto premium products.
