Bilt Rewards is organized around a category other programs avoid, housing. Members earn Bilt Points on rent and mortgage payments without paying a transaction fee, and those points are transferable to airline and hotel partners, giving them the ceiling value of a premium travel currency. The program layers on local merchant and dining benefits meant to reward members where they live.
Opening earning on rent is the innovation. Rent is typically the largest recurring line in a household budget and has historically earned nothing, so attaching a transferable currency to it creates value where none existed and gives Bilt a differentiated reason to exist alongside established issuers. The model has drawn card-issuer partners, and the underlying card arrangements have shifted over time, most recently from Wells Fargo to Column N.A. through Cardless, but points stay tied to the Bilt membership rather than any one card. That rework, Bilt Card 2.0, also changed the core mechanic: housing no longer runs through the credit line at all, it is pulled from a linked bank account, and the earn rate on housing now floats between 0.5 and 1.25 points per dollar depending on how much a member spends outside housing.
The lesson for an enterprise operator is that the richest loyalty opportunities can lie in spend categories everyone else treats as un-rewardable. By solving the mechanics of earning on rent, Bilt captured a large, recurring, previously ignored payment and turned it into engagement. The strategic question for any operator is which high-value behavior in its category currently earns nothing.
