How is an ecommerce loyalty program different from a store program?
An ecommerce loyalty program rewards members for buying on a website, in an app or on a marketplace. The tools look like those of a store program: points, tiers, member prices and paid perks. The way it runs differs in four ways.
- The buyer is known by default. Every online order runs through an account or an email address. In a store, the member has to scan a code or give a phone number.
- Value posts when goods ship. Wayfair works out rewards at the point of shipment and issues them within 48 hours of it. Target credits Target Circle Bonus purchases once items ship or are ready for pickup.
- Returns run higher. NRF and Happy Returns estimate that 19.3% of online sales will be returned in 2025. Across all sales, retailers expect 15.8%. Each return has to take back the points it earned.
- Delivery is part of the reward. Free or faster shipping is a core perk of Amazon Prime, Walmart+ and Wayfair Rewards. That adds a delivery cost to the program's budget.
For large retailers, the online program and the store program are the same program. The U.S. Census Bureau puts e-commerce at 17.1% of U.S. retail sales in the second quarter of 2026. Target says 20.6% of its 2025 merchandise sales started on a digital channel. Its stores still fulfilled 97.6% of merchandise sales. That figure includes digital orders that stores shipped or handed over through Order Pickup, Drive Up and Same-Day Delivery.
| Area | Store program | Ecommerce program |
|---|---|---|
| How the member is known | Scans a code or gives a phone number at the till | Logs in or gives an email on every order |
| When value posts | At payment | At shipment or pickup |
| What happens on a return | Reversed at the service desk | Taken back when the refund posts, often days later, at times in a store |
| What the perks cost | Discounts and rewards | Discounts and rewards, plus the cost of free shipping |
| Main fraud risks | Shared cards and staff abuse | Fake new accounts, shared codes, bulk buys for resale and false returns |
| What the program sees | Basket, store and time of day | Basket plus search, browse, cart and device |
Which ecommerce loyalty program models work online?
Five models show up across large online programs. Each example below comes from the company's own page or filing. The best retail loyalty programs guide profiles store-led programs.
A cash-style reward on each order
Wayfair Rewards gives paid members 5% back in Reward Dollars on qualifying items. Membership costs $29 a year. Members who hold a Wayfair card join free and earn 7% back when they pay with it. Reward Dollars work across AllModern, Birch Lane, Joss & Main and Perigold as well as Wayfair. A flat percentage is easy for members to grasp, and it puts the program's cost in one number.
Paid plans built on fast delivery
Amazon Prime costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year. It includes Same-Day, One-Day and Two-Day Delivery on millions of items. Walmart+ lists a $98 annual fee, free delivery on orders over $35 and free shipping from Walmart.com with no order minimum. Target Circle 360 adds unlimited same-day delivery on eligible orders over $35. The paid loyalty programs guide covers pricing and how members judge the value.
Subscriptions that reorder for the member
Chewy runs Autoship, a plan that orders, pays for and ships pet goods on repeat. In fiscal 2025, Autoship customers spent about $10.5 billion with Chewy. That was 83.3% of its net sales, counting what those customers bought outside Autoship too. Chewy calls Autoship a key driver of repeat sales and of keeping customers.
Card-linked tiers
Target Circle Card holders get a 5% discount on nearly all purchases. They also get free standard and 2-day shipping on eligible digital orders, plus extended returns. Target lists credit card profit sharing from the program among its revenue sources. The card turns the payment method into the top tier of the program.
How marketplaces run loyalty
A marketplace has to decide which sales its benefits cover. Walmart+ free shipping excludes most Marketplace items. Etsy told shareholders in August 2026 that it is testing Etsy Insider. It is also exploring unpaid tactics such as rewards and stamps. The open design question is funding. When a third-party seller makes the sale, the program needs a rule for who pays for the points.
What ecommerce loyalty program ideas do large retailers use?
Beyond the core model, these ideas come from live programs.
- Early access to online events. Walmart+ lets paid members shop online deals early for events such as Black Friday.
- Returns as a perk. Walmart+ picks up returns from members' homes at select locations. Target Circle Card and Target Circle 360 include extended returns.
- Sales for members and a birthday offer. Wayfair Rewards members get their own sales, bonus reward events and one birthday offer each year.
- Member prices in the cart and at the till. Target Circle Deals apply on their own when a member identifies at checkout. Each deal states whether it works in store, online or both.
- Phone checkout in store. Walmart+ members can scan and pay with their phone in stores.
How does unified commerce change an ecommerce loyalty program?
Unified commerce means one customer record, one stock pool and one order history across web, app and store. For loyalty, it means one member ID and one balance in every channel. Ulta Beauty shows why. It had more than 46 million Ulta Beauty Rewards members at the end of fiscal 2025, and members drove about 95% of total sales. In that year, 19% of loyalty members shopped in both stores and digital channels. Ulta says these omnichannel guests have historically spent over three times as much as store-only guests.
That sets four rules for the program.
- Identify the member in every channel. Wayfair members earn in stores by scanning the QR code in the app or mobile site. To use Target Circle Deals in store, Target members show the Wallet in the Target app, a printed barcode or their phone number. Target turns away photos of barcodes.
- Keep one ledger. Points earned online have to be spendable in store from the same balance, and the reverse.
- Set the channel on the offer. Define channel as a condition on each offer, so one rule serves every channel.
- Handle returns across channels. A store return of an online order has to find the original order and reverse its points.
The omnichannel loyalty entry goes deeper on matching IDs. The retail page shows how big retail ecosystems run it.
How should an ecommerce program handle returns, fraud and promo abuse?
What to do when goods come back
Write the reversal rules before launch. Wayfair gives no rewards on orders that are canceled, returned or refunded. If a return or refund comes after shipment, it takes back rewards it already paid, and in some cases the balance goes below zero. Target credits used rewards back, up to the value of a returned item. Its terms let it remove rewards earned on returned items and push a balance below zero.
For illustration, a member buys $400 of furniture and earns 5% back, or $20. They spend $15 of it on a second order. Then they return half of the first order, and the program reverses $10. The balance drops from $5 to minus $5. The platform needs a rule for that state, such as blocking redemption until the balance recovers.
Return fraud
NRF and Happy Returns found that 9% of all returns are fraudulent. Retailers that track it saw rises in overstated return quantities, empty-box returns and decoy returns such as fake goods. A loyalty program adds one more payoff to a fraudulent return when points stay on the account after the refund. So reverse points from the same refund event that moves the money.
Promo abuse and bulk buys for resale
Online programs face promo abuse. Typical patterns are new accounts opened to farm welcome offers and discount codes posted on coupon sites. Bots also buy limited stock for resale. Program terms set the rules that controls enforce. Target Circle allows one membership per guest, excludes resellers and can deduct rewards earned against its terms. Each Target Circle Deal can cap items per transaction and uses per member.
Wayfair gives no Reward Dollars on gift cards and bars members from buying gift cards with them. Detection has to run in real time, before a redemption clears at checkout. The loyalty fraud prevention guide covers the controls in depth.
How do you measure an ecommerce loyalty program?
Some retailers that file with the SEC publish their loyalty numbers. Copy how they define each one, then add a test group to see cause.
- Member share of sales. Ulta says members drove about 95% of its total sales in fiscal 2025. A high share shows reach. Proving cause takes a holdout test.
- Subscription share of sales. Chewy tracks Autoship customer sales as a share of net sales. It calls this a key sign of repeat sales and of keeping customers.
- Sales per active customer. Chewy counts a customer as active if they ordered in the last 364 days. It divides four quarters of net sales by that count, and the result was $591 in fiscal 2025.
- Cross-channel share. Ulta reports the share of loyalty members who shop both in stores and online. It was 19% in fiscal 2025.
- Returns and reversal lag. Compare member return rates with the NRF estimate of 19.3% for online sales. Also track the days between a refund and the points reversal.
- Reward cost as a share of member sales. Wayfair's 5% back fixes that cost on each order in advance. For a points program, track the cost of points issued against member sales.
- Incremental lift. Hold back a random group of members from an offer and compare their spend with the rest. Lift is the gap between the two groups.

What should an ecommerce loyalty platform do?
Ecommerce loyalty software sits between the commerce platform, the order system, the store tills and the marketing tools. Use this checklist in vendor demos. Ask each vendor to run every test live on a test account.
| Criterion | Why it matters | What to ask in a demo |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce platform connector | Earning and redemption have to work inside your checkout | Show earn and burn on our stack, such as Shopify, Salesforce Commerce, SAP Commerce or VTEX. |
| Points as payment | The cart is where online members spend rewards | Split a payment between points and a card, then refund it. |
| Rules for each item in the cart | Programs such as Wayfair Rewards exclude tax, shipping fees and gift cards | Set category exclusions without code. Who can change them? |
| Posting at shipment or pickup | Value should follow goods that reach the member | Show pending points and the event that confirms them. |
| Returns of part of an order | Each refund has to reverse the right points, redeemed ones included | Return one item from a mixed order paid partly in points. |
| When a balance goes below zero | A return after points are spent can push the balance below zero | What does the member see, and what can they redeem? |
| One member on web, app and in store | Split accounts split the balance and the data | Merge two duplicate accounts. What happens to history and tier? |
| Paid plan billing | Fees, renewals and perks have to stay in step | Lapse a membership. When does free shipping switch off? |
| Who pays on a marketplace | Seller sales need a rule for who pays for rewards | Show rewards paid by sellers and by the platform, and how each is settled. |
| Real-time fraud scoring | Abuse has to stop before a redemption clears | Fake a wave of new accounts and a resale pattern. What gets flagged? |
| Peak scale and uptime | Holiday peaks hit all systems at once | Show load test results and the uptime SLA. |
| Screens all members can use | EU law covers e-commerce services from June 28, 2025 | Show how the member screens were tested for access. |

Frequently asked questions
Which loyalty model suits an online retailer best?
The best model is the one that fits how often people buy. Goods that run out on a cycle suit a plan like Chewy Autoship. Rare, high-ticket buys suit a flat reward on each order, the way Wayfair Rewards works. Retailers with fast delivery build paid plans around shipping, as Amazon Prime and Walmart+ do.
Should ecommerce points post when the order is placed or when it ships?
Post them at shipment or pickup. Wayfair works out rewards at shipment, and Target credits Circle Bonus purchases once items ship or are ready for pickup. Canceled orders then earn nothing, and fewer reversals reach the ledger.
Can a loyalty points balance go negative?
Yes, and Wayfair and Target both say so in their terms. Wayfair deducts rewards when an order is returned after shipment, which in some cases leaves a negative balance. Target reserves the right to take Target Circle Rewards below zero. Members then wait until the balance is back above zero to redeem.
Does the European Accessibility Act apply to ecommerce loyalty programs?
It applies to the e-commerce service the program sits inside. Since June 28, 2025, the Act has covered e-commerce services provided to consumers, including those run through websites and mobile apps. Treat the loyalty sign-up, account and redemption screens as part of that service, and test them.
Does GRAVTY connect to Shopify and Salesforce Commerce?
Yes. GRAVTY has prebuilt connectors for Shopify, Salesforce Commerce, SAP Hybris and VTEX, listed on its integrations page. Other shop platforms plug in through its APIs.
How do marketplaces handle loyalty for third-party sellers?
They set which seller sales the perks cover and who pays for the rewards. Walmart+ free shipping excludes most Marketplace items. Etsy is testing Etsy Insider and exploring unpaid tactics such as rewards and stamps.
