Marriott Bonvoy had more than 295 million members at the end of June 2026. Hilton Honors counts more than 260 million. Both are free to join, and both price award nights by hotel and date. This guide compares the two from their own terms, fact sheets and filings. It covers how each program earns, what free nights cost, how status works and where the points can go. The last section reads both designs from the side of the teams that run loyalty programs.

Is Marriott or Hilton better?

Hilton is the better pick for most travelers who chase elite perks. Its Gold tier takes 25 nights and comes with a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast, depending on brand and region. Marriott Gold also takes 25 nights. Its perks are welcome points, 2 p.m. late checkout and a better room when one is free.

Marriott is the better pick for travelers who want more hotels and more ways to spend points. It reported over 10,000 properties in 148 countries and territories. Its points move to 38 airlines, and every member who books five award nights in a row on a standard award pays points for four. At Hilton, that fifth night is free from Silver status up.

Which hotel chain is bigger, Marriott or Hilton?

Marriott is the larger chain. Its second-quarter report counted over 10,000 properties in 148 countries and territories at June 30, 2026. Its earn page lists over 30 hotel brands. Hilton describes 28 brands with more than 9,400 properties and nearly 1.4 million rooms in 144 countries and territories.

Marriott describes its brands as spanning luxury, premium, select, midscale, extended stay and all-inclusive. Hilton’s 28 brands include Waldorf Astoria, Conrad and Home2 Suites. The useful test is local. List the cities you visit most, then check which chain has a hotel you would book in each one.

How do you earn points with Marriott and Hilton?

Both programs pay 10 base points per US dollar at most brands. Each pays less at some brands. Marriott pays 4 at StudioRes and 5 at brands such as Residence Inn and Element. Hilton pays 3 at LivSmart Studios and 5 at brands such as Homewood Suites and Tru.

The gap opens with elite bonuses. Hilton adds 20% at Silver, 80% at Gold, 100% at Diamond and 120% at Diamond Reserve. Marriott adds 10% at Silver, 25% at Gold, 50% at Platinum and 75% at Titanium and Ambassador. On the same bill, a Hilton Gold member earns a bonus more than three times the size of a Marriott Gold member’s.

For illustration, take $1,000 of paid stays at a brand that pays 10 base points per dollar. The table applies each program’s published tier bonus to the 10,000 base points.

Tier levelMarriott Bonvoy pointsHilton Honors points
Base member10,00010,000
Silver11,00012,000
Gold12,50018,000
Marriott Platinum, Hilton Diamond15,00020,000
Marriott Titanium, Hilton Diamond Reserve17,50022,000

Points are only half of the sum, because the two currencies buy different amounts. Marriott stays start at 12,000 points a night. Hilton quotes Points and Money from 5,000 points. Its reward prices move by hotel and date. Compare the points price of the exact night you want before you pick a side.

Both programs also pay away from the hotel. Marriott members earn on Hertz rentals and on Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy packages. Hilton members earn 3 points per $1 on Lyft rides in the US and Canada once they link their accounts.

How do Marriott and Hilton award nights compare?

Neither program prices awards on a fixed chart. Marriott says the points for a night vary by hotel, room type, length of stay and time of year. It says those prices are updated continuously. Hilton says redemption varies by property, location, room type and peak or off-peak dates.

The extra free night is the clearest rule gap. Any Marriott member who books five award nights in a row on one reservation with a Standard or PointSavers award pays points for four. Hilton gives every fifth night free on Standard Room Reward stays of five nights or more paid fully in points, up to four free nights a stay. Hilton limits that perk to Silver members and above.

Hilton adds flexibility at the booking screen. Members mix points and cash in 1,000-point steps from 5,000 points. Stays booked fully with points carry no blackout dates and no resort fees. Marriott points travel further from the hotel. They transfer to 38 airlines, mostly at 3 to 1, and they pay for events through Marriott Bonvoy Moments.

Which elite status is easier to earn?

Hilton gives more ways in. Since January 1, 2026, Silver, Gold and Diamond can each be earned by nights, stays or spend. Silver takes 10 nights, Gold 25 and Diamond 50. Diamond Reserve takes 80 nights or 40 stays, plus $18,000 of spend.

Marriott counts nights. Silver takes 10 qualifying nights, Gold 25, Platinum 50 and Titanium 75. Ambassador takes 100 nights plus $23,000 of qualifying spend in a year. Hilton’s 2026 rules cut Gold from 40 nights to 25 and Diamond from 60 to 50. Spend replaced base points as the third route.

The tiers differ most in the middle. Hilton Gold brings the food credit or breakfast, plus space-available upgrades up to Executive Floor rooms. Marriott Gold Elite brings 250 or 500 welcome points a stay, 2 p.m. late checkout on request and an enhanced room when one is available.

Lounge access starts at Marriott Platinum Elite and at Hilton Diamond. Marriott Platinum adds suite upgrades when available, a welcome gift that includes breakfast at some brands and 4 p.m. late checkout. Hilton Diamond adds a 48-hour room guarantee. Diamond Reserve adds guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout and Confirmable Upgrade Rewards at booking.

Both reward long loyalty. Marriott grants Lifetime Platinum Elite after 600 nights and 10 years at Platinum or higher. Hilton grants Lifetime Diamond after 10 years at Diamond plus 1,000 nights or $200,000 of eligible spend.

Which program has better partners?

Marriott has the wider network. Points move to 38 airlines, and miles from Aeroplan move in at 1 to 1. Members can also bring points in from American Express Membership Rewards and MGM Rewards, the latter at 10 to 8. That makes Bonvoy a hub for travelers who collect in several programs.

Hilton leans on stays and everyday spend. Members can book and redeem at more than 450 boutique hotels through its partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World. They can also earn and redeem at AutoCamp sites, pay for Amazon purchases with points and book events through Hilton Honors Experiences. Points convert to airline miles through Reward Exchange.

What does each program cost?

Membership in both programs is free. The costs sit in the co-brand credit cards. Marriott’s terms list US cards from American Express and Chase. In August 2026, Marriott said it had signed new long-term card agreements with both banks. Hilton offers four American Express cards, and each one carries Hilton elite status automatically.

Both programs sell points, and both cancel points after 24 consecutive months without account activity. At Hilton, a stay, a partner earn, a points purchase or a donation counts as activity. A Marriott account that sits inactive for 24 months forfeits its points.

Hilton vs Marriott rewards: which should you choose?

  • Frequent US business travelers: Hilton. Gold at 25 nights covers breakfast or a daily food credit, and Diamond comes at 50 nights.
  • Global travelers: Marriott. It has more hotels in more places.
  • Families and households: Hilton. Points pool across up to 11 accounts at no fee.
  • Flyers who want miles: Marriott. Its points move to 38 airlines.
  • Guests on long trips: Marriott. Every member gets the fifth night free on standard awards.
  • Anyone who stays at both: join both. Each one is free.

What do Bonvoy and Honors teach a loyalty team?

The two programs make different bets on the same base earn rate. Marriott builds one currency with many doors. Points come in from American Express and MGM Rewards, and they go out to nights, airlines and Moments events. Each exit gives points a use when a member has no trip planned. That keeps the balance worth checking between stays.

Hilton builds status that is cheap to reach and useful every day. Gold at 25 nights carries a food credit or breakfast, and spend now counts toward every tier. In 2026, Hilton widened the middle of the ladder and added a tier above it with a spend floor. Its most valuable guests still stand apart.

Both programs now count money as well as nights. Hilton swapped base points for dollars of spend, and Marriott asks for $23,000 of spend at the top. A night count rewards the guest who stays most often. A spend count rewards the guest who brings the most revenue. Our tier strategy guide covers how to weigh the two.

Both programs also run on money from outside the loyalty team. Hilton’s annual report says its program is funded by contributions from eligible revenues that members generate. Hotels in its system pay in, and so do strategic partners. Marriott’s annual report says co-brand card payments are a significant funding source for its program. It also says members booked about 68 percent of its global room nights in 2025.

Points also have a second buyer: the bank. Marriott said its new card agreements deliver incremental value to owners, cardholders and members. For a hotel group, the co-brand card is a revenue line that rides on the loyalty currency.

How GRAVTY handles multi-brand hotel loyalty

Marriott and Hilton own their brands. Global Hotel Alliance does not, yet it runs one program. GHA DISCOVERY puts 60+ independent hotel brands on GRAVTY. Guests earn and spend one currency, Discovery Dollars, at all of them. Each brand keeps its own tier benefits and rules. Loyalty Juggernaut reports that the alliance grew total revenue by 146% and direct bookings by 29%.

The platform side of that job is partner settlement: when a guest earns at one brand and redeems at another, money moves between owners at an agreed rate. GRAVTY runs 500M+ members in production, holds a 99.99% uptime SLA and has average latency under 50 ms.

A status-year change like Hilton’s 2026 reset also tests the batch side of a platform. WestJet’s year-end rollover takes 28 hours on GRAVTY, down from 10 days on Siebel. See how GRAVTY runs hotel loyalty, or compare more programs in our guide to the best hotel rewards programs.
