World of Hyatt and Marriott Bonvoy sit at opposite ends of the big hotel programs. Hyatt is the smaller chain, with a published award chart and rich top-tier perks. Marriott has the far larger footprint, with dynamic award prices and 38 airline partners. This guide compares the two from their own terms, program pages and filings. The last section reads both designs from the side of the teams that run loyalty programs.
Is Hyatt or Marriott better?
Hyatt is the better pick for travelers who plan around a few trips and want to know the price first. Award nights sit on a published chart, and standard rooms run from 3,000 to 75,000 points a night. Globalists, at 60 nights, get Club access or breakfast and upgrades up to standard suites.
Marriott is the better pick for travelers who need a hotel almost anywhere. It reported over 10,000 properties in 148 countries and territories at June 30, 2026. Hyatt reported more than 1,500 hotels and all-inclusive properties in 83 countries on the same date. Marriott also gives every member the fifth night free on a five-night standard award.

How much bigger is Marriott than Hyatt?
Marriott reported over 10,000 properties to Hyatt’s 1,500-plus, and its program has more than four times the members. Marriott Bonvoy had more than 295 million members at the end of June 2026. World of Hyatt had 66 million members in July 2026. Marriott’s earn page lists over 30 hotel brands.
Hyatt describes its portfolio as premium brands. Its Luxury Portfolio includes Park Hyatt, Alila and Miraval, and its Essentials range includes Hyatt Place and Hyatt House. Hyatt also owns Mr & Mrs Smith. In 2024 it opened more than 700 boutique and luxury hotels and villas from that collection to World of Hyatt points.
The smaller program is growing fast. Hyatt said in November 2025 that World of Hyatt had grown nearly 30% a year since 2017. For a traveler, the test is still local. List the cities you visit most and check which chain has a hotel there.
How do you earn points with Hyatt and Marriott?
Marriott pays more points per dollar. Members earn 10 base points per US dollar at most brands. Hyatt pays 5 base points per eligible dollar at most hotels and 2.5 at Hyatt Studios. Elite bonuses widen the gap. Hyatt adds 10% at Discoverist, 20% at Explorist and 30% at Globalist. Marriott adds 10% at Silver and climbs to 75% at Titanium.
The per-dollar count misleads, because the two currencies buy different amounts. For illustration, take $1,000 of paid stays at each program’s standard earn rate. The table shows the points each tier earns, set against each program’s lowest published standard-room price.
| Tier | Points on $1,000 | Lowest published award night |
|---|---|---|
| Hyatt member | 5,000 | 3,000 points (Category 1, Lowest level) |
| Hyatt Globalist | 6,500 | 3,000 points (Category 1, Lowest level) |
| Marriott member | 10,000 | 12,000 points |
| Marriott Titanium Elite | 17,500 | 12,000 points |
On those numbers, $1,000 of Hyatt stays covers a Category 1 night at the Lowest level, with points left over. The same spend at Marriott falls short of its 12,000-point floor until the Gold tier bonus lifts it to 12,500. Most travelers book above the floor in both programs, so check the exact night.
How do Hyatt and Marriott price award nights?
Hyatt keeps a chart. In February 2026, Hyatt said it would keep fixed point thresholds and add price levels from May. Each of its eight categories now has five levels: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top. Hyatt said only a limited number of nights would move into the Upper and Top levels in 2026.
The chart sets standard rooms at 3,000 to 9,000 points in Category 1 and 35,000 to 75,000 in Category 8. Free nights carry no blackout dates in standard rooms. Hyatt waives resort fees on free night awards for every member. Points + Cash takes 50% of the points of a free night plus 50 to 70% off the Standard Rate.
Marriott prices each night by hotel and date, and it updates those prices continuously. Stays start at 12,000 points a night. Any member who books five award nights in a row on one reservation with a Standard or PointSavers award pays points for four. Marriott points also leave the hotel. They transfer to 38 airlines, mostly at 3 to 1, and pay for events through Marriott Bonvoy Moments.
Which elite status is better, Hyatt or Marriott?
Hyatt has three tiers. Discoverist takes 10 nights or 25,000 base points a year, Explorist 30 nights or 50,000, and Globalist 60 nights or 100,000. Marriott has five tiers, earned by nights. Silver takes 10, Gold 25, Platinum 50 and Titanium 75. Ambassador takes 100 nights plus $23,000 of qualifying spend.
Hyatt puts its best perks in one tier. Globalists get Club lounge access or breakfast, upgrades up to standard suites, 4 p.m. late checkout as available and waived resort fees on paid stays. Explorists get upgraded rooms and, for award bookings since June 30, 2026, advance access to booking. At Marriott, lounge access, suite upgrades and 4 p.m. checkout start at Platinum Elite, at 50 nights.
Both pay for volume past the tier. Hyatt’s Milestone Rewards start at 20 nights and arrive every 10 nights up to 150. Almost every threshold offers a choice of three rewards. At 40 nights, a member gets a Guest of Honor award to share Globalist benefits for up to 7 nights. Marriott gives Platinum members an annual choice benefit at 50 nights.
Lifetime status works differently. A Hyatt member who earns 1,000,000 base points keeps Globalist for life. A Marriott member needs 600 nights and 10 years at Platinum or above for Lifetime Platinum Elite.
Which program has better partners?
Marriott has the wider transfer network. Points go out to 38 airlines, and points come in from American Express Membership Rewards and MGM Rewards. Marriott members also earn on Hertz rentals.
Hyatt is adding airline ties. On September 9, 2026, it announced a deal with Delta Air Lines. Once it starts, elite members of both programs can earn Hyatt points and Delta miles when they travel. The same day, American Airlines said it and Hyatt had mutually decided to end their enhanced relationship. Members keep earning through the current earning year.
What does each program cost?
Both programs are free to join. The paid side is the co-brand card. The Chase World of Hyatt Credit Card comes with automatic Discoverist status. In November 2025, Hyatt said top-spending Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers would get Explorist status from the middle of 2026. Marriott lists US cards from American Express and Chase in its terms.
Both programs cancel points after 24 months with no account activity. Hyatt keeps the account open, so a member can start earning again. A valid Hyatt co-brand card counts as activity.
Hyatt or Marriott: which should you choose?
- Planners who want known prices: Hyatt. The chart tells you the cost before you book.
- Top status: Hyatt. Globalist takes 60 nights and includes Club access or breakfast.
- Travel anywhere: Marriott. It has over 10,000 properties, and Hyatt has more than 1,500.
- Flyers who want miles: Marriott. Its points move to 38 airlines.
- Guests on long award trips: Marriott. Every member gets the fifth night free on standard awards.
- Delta flyers: watch Hyatt. Dual earning starts once the new collaboration launches.
What do Hyatt and Marriott teach a loyalty team?
Hyatt treats price as a product. A published chart tells members the cost before they plan. For a chain with fewer hotels, that certainty gives travelers a reason to plan trips around it. In 2026, Hyatt grew each category from three price levels to five without leaving the chart. It kept the promise and gained room to price peak nights.
Hyatt also turns rewards into choices and gifts. Most milestones offer a choice, and Guest of Honor lets a member share status with someone else. Each gift puts a new guest inside the best version of the brand. Marriott spreads value across scale instead: one currency, more than 30 brands and 38 airline exits.
The two programs also measure themselves differently. Marriott’s annual report says members booked about 68 percent of its global room nights in 2025. Hyatt reports depth instead. In November 2025 it said World of Hyatt has more than 40% more members per hotel than the next closest competitor. It also said members spend more, stay more and book direct more often than non-members.
The two growth paths differ too. Marriott grows by adding hotels to one huge network. Hyatt grows the program by adding places to spend points, such as Mr & Mrs Smith hotels. It also pairs with airlines. A loyalty team with a small footprint can copy that move. Partners widen where members can earn and redeem without new hotels.
