One Key launched in 2023 as Expedia Group's answer to a structural problem: three large travel brands, Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, each ran a separate rewards program on a separate member base. One Key collapses them into a single currency, OneKeyCash, and a single status ladder of Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum earned through trip elements across a calendar year. OneKeyCash is cash-like, redeemed one to one as dollars against eligible hotels, car rentals, activities, and packages, which makes its value easy for a member to read.
The program is also a live example of post-launch repricing. Effective July 28, 2026, Expedia moves base earning to a tiered scale, with Platinum members reaching up to 3 percent while entry-tier Blue members see their base rate roughly halved. Earning on flights is being removed, and the hotel price guarantee on Expedia and Hotels.com is being withdrawn.
For an enterprise operator, One Key carries two lessons. First, unifying brands onto one currency is primarily a member-identity and liability-consolidation project, not a marketing one. Second, the value of a launched currency is a promise, and cutting earn rates or removing guarantees within a few years is a trust cost that has to be modeled alongside the liability savings, because members register a devaluation quickly.
