Hilton Honors counts more than 260 million members, and World of Hyatt counts 66 million. The size gap is the first difference, and the earn rate is the second. Hilton pays 10 base points per dollar at most brands, and Hyatt pays 5. Hyatt prices award nights on a published chart. Hilton prices them by hotel and date. This guide compares the two from their own terms, program pages and filings. The last section reads both designs from the side of the teams that run loyalty programs.

Is Hilton or Hyatt better?

Hilton is the better pick for travelers who want status that is easy to reach and easy to use. Gold takes 25 nights, 15 stays or $6,000 of spend, and it comes with a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast, depending on brand and region. Hilton also has more than six times as many properties.

Hyatt is the better pick for travelers who plan around a few trips and want to know the price first. Award nights sit on a published chart that starts at 3,000 points. Globalist, at 60 nights, includes Club access or breakfast and upgrades up to standard suites. Both programs skip resort fees on award stays paid fully in points.

How big are Hilton and Hyatt?

Hilton is the larger chain by a wide margin. It describes 28 brands with more than 9,400 properties and nearly 1.4 million rooms in 144 countries and territories. Hyatt reported more than 1,500 hotels and all-inclusive properties in 83 countries at June 30, 2026. Hilton Honors has about four times the members of World of Hyatt.

Both run luxury and everyday brands. Hilton’s 28 brands include Waldorf Astoria, Conrad and Home2 Suites. Hyatt’s luxury brands include Park Hyatt, Alila and Miraval. Its everyday brands include Hyatt Place and Hyatt House. Hyatt also owns Mr & Mrs Smith. In 2024 it opened more than 700 boutique and luxury hotels and villas from that collection to World of Hyatt points.

The smaller program is growing fast. Hyatt said in November 2025 that World of Hyatt had grown nearly 30% a year since 2017. For a traveler, the test is still local. List the cities you visit most and check which chain has a hotel you would book there.

How do you earn points with Hilton and Hyatt?

Hilton pays more points per dollar. Members earn 10 base points at most brands, and 5 at brands such as Homewood Suites and Tru. Hyatt pays 5 base points per eligible dollar at most hotels and 2.5 at Hyatt Studios. Hilton’s elite bonuses are also larger: 20% at Silver, 80% at Gold, 100% at Diamond and 120% at Diamond Reserve. Hyatt adds 10%, 20% and 30%.

For illustration, take $1,000 of paid stays at a brand that pays each program’s standard earn rate. The table applies each published tier bonus to the base points.

Tier levelHilton Honors pointsWorld of Hyatt points
Base member10,0005,000
Entry tier (Silver, Discoverist)12,0005,500
Middle tier (Gold, Explorist)18,0006,000
Top Hyatt tier (Globalist), Hilton Diamond20,0006,500
Hilton Diamond Reserve22,000Not applicable

The currencies buy different amounts, so more points do not mean more nights. A Hyatt standard room costs 3,000 to 9,000 points in Category 1 and 12,000 to 25,000 in Category 4. Hilton quotes Points and Money from 5,000 points. Its reward prices move by hotel and date. Compare the exact night you want before you pick a side.

Both programs pay away from the bed. Hyatt members earn points on stays, dining, spa services and FIND Experiences. Hilton members earn 3 points per $1 on Lyft rides in the US and Canada after linking accounts, and they can book events through Hilton Honors Experiences.

How do Hilton and Hyatt award nights compare?

Hyatt keeps a chart. In February 2026, Hyatt said it would keep fixed point thresholds and add price levels from May. Each of its eight categories now has five levels: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top. Hyatt said only a limited number of nights would move into the Upper and Top levels in 2026. Free nights carry no blackout dates in standard rooms.

Hilton prices awards by hotel and date. It says redemption varies by property, location, room type and peak or off-peak dates. Members from Silver up get every fifth night free on Standard Room Reward stays of five nights or more paid fully in points. The cap is four free nights a stay. Members also mix points and cash in 1,000-point steps from 5,000 points.

Both programs spare members the resort fee on award stays. Hilton says stays booked with 100% points carry no resort fees. Hyatt waives resort fees on free night awards for every member, and for Globalists on paid stays too. Hyatt’s Points + Cash takes 50% of the points of a free night plus 50 to 70% off the Standard Rate.

Which elite status is easier to earn?

Hilton gives more ways in. Since January 1, 2026, Silver, Gold and Diamond can each be earned by nights, stays or spend. Silver takes 10 nights, Gold 25 and Diamond 50. Diamond Reserve takes 80 nights or 40 stays, plus $18,000 of spend. Hyatt counts nights or base points: 10 nights or 25,000 base points for Discoverist, 30 nights or 50,000 for Explorist and 60 nights or 100,000 for Globalist.

At the middle, Hilton Gold brings the food credit or breakfast plus space-available upgrades up to Executive Floor rooms. Hyatt Explorist, at 30 nights, brings upgraded rooms that exclude suites, 2 p.m. late checkout and advance access to award booking since June 30, 2026.

At the top, Hilton Diamond takes 50 nights. It adds executive lounge access, upgrades up to a 1-bedroom suite and a 48-hour room guarantee. Diamond Reserve adds guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout and Confirmable Upgrade Rewards. Hyatt Globalist takes 60 nights. It adds Club access or breakfast, upgrades that include standard suites, 4 p.m. late checkout as available and a 48-hour availability guarantee.

Both reward volume past the tier. Hyatt’s Milestone Rewards start at 20 nights and arrive every 10 nights up to 150, and almost every threshold offers a choice of three rewards. At 40 nights, a Hyatt member gets a Guest of Honor award to share Globalist benefits for up to 7 nights. Hilton Gold earns 10,000 bonus points every 10 nights after 40 nights, and a Diamond member who reaches 60 nights can gift Gold status.

Lifetime status takes different paths. Hilton grants Lifetime Diamond after 10 years at Diamond plus 1,000 nights or $200,000 of eligible spend. A Hyatt member who earns 1,000,000 base points keeps Globalist for life.

Which program has better partners?

Hilton leans on stays and everyday spend. Members can book and redeem at more than 450 boutique hotels through its partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World. They can also earn and redeem at AutoCamp sites, pay for Amazon purchases with points and exchange points for airline miles through Reward Exchange.

Hyatt is building airline ties. On September 9, 2026, it announced a deal with Delta Air Lines. Once it starts, elite members of both programs can earn Hyatt points and Delta miles when they travel. The same day, American Airlines said it and Hyatt had mutually decided to end their enhanced relationship. Members keep earning through the current earning year.

What does each program cost?

Both programs are free to join. The paid side is the co-brand card. Hilton offers four American Express cards, and each one carries Hilton elite status automatically. The Chase World of Hyatt Credit Card comes with automatic Discoverist status.

Both programs cancel points after 24 months with no account activity. At Hilton, a stay, a partner earn, a points purchase or a donation counts as activity. At Hyatt, a valid co-brand card counts too, and the account stays open after points expire. Both sell points. Hyatt caps purchases at 55,000 a year for your own account.

Sharing differs more. Hilton lets members pool points with up to 10 others at no fee. Hyatt lets a member combine points with one designated member, once every 30 days.

Hyatt vs Hilton: which should you choose?

  • Hotels in more places: Hilton. It has more than 9,400 properties.
  • Status that is easy to reach: Hilton. Gold takes 25 nights, and Diamond takes 50.
  • Known award prices: Hyatt. The chart tells you the cost before you book.
  • Families and households: Hilton. Points pool across up to 11 accounts at no fee.
  • Top-tier breakfast or lounge: either. Diamond takes 50 nights and Globalist takes 60.
  • Delta flyers: watch Hyatt. Dual earning starts once the new collaboration launches.
  • Anyone who stays at both: join both. Each one is free.

What do Honors and World of Hyatt teach a loyalty team?

Hilton and Hyatt grow the same asset in two ways. Hilton scales: more than 260 million members across more than 9,400 properties. Hyatt measures depth. In November 2025 it said World of Hyatt has more than 40% more members per hotel than the next closest competitor. It also said members spend more, stay more and book direct more often than non-members.

Both programs tie perks to direct booking. Hilton says on-property benefits require a confirmed reservation made through its direct channels. Hyatt says members who book directly through its channels get benefits such as Guest of Honor and confirmed suite upgrades at time of booking. The program works as a direct-booking lever as much as a points scheme.

Each moved a different lever in 2026. Hilton changed the status ladder: it cut the nights for Gold and Diamond, added spend as a route and put a spend floor on a new top tier. Hyatt changed the award chart: it added price levels and kept the published thresholds. One adjusted who earns status. The other adjusted what a night costs.

Cards fund both. Hyatt said it expects a significant increase in economics from its expanded Chase agreement. Hilton hands elite status to holders of its four American Express cards. For a hotel group, the card is a revenue line that rides on the loyalty currency. Our tier strategy guide covers how to weigh status paths like these.

How GRAVTY handles direct-booking loyalty across brands

Global Hotel Alliance runs one program across 60+ independent hotel brands on GRAVTY, Loyalty Juggernaut’s platform. Guests earn and spend one currency, Discovery Dollars, at every brand. Each brand keeps its own tier benefits. A currency that spends like money gives guests a reason to book direct. Loyalty Juggernaut reports that the alliance grew total revenue by 146% and direct bookings by 29%.

The platform side of that job is partner settlement. Deutsche Telekom runs one program on GRAVTY with 4,500 partners across 9 countries. GRAVTY runs 500M+ members in production, holds a 99.99% uptime SLA and has average latency under 50 ms.
