Many people who ask this are players, so the first section gives the plain answer. The rest is for casino and resort operators, built from their filings, terms and rules as of October 1, 2026.

What is a casino loyalty program?

A casino loyalty program is a membership that records what a guest plays and spends at a casino resort. The guest shows a card or app at slot machines, tables, hotels and restaurants. The program turns that activity into status and rewards. New Jersey's rules call it a casino rewards club. The American Gaming Association calls it a player club.

Caesars Rewards is free to join, and its program rules require members to be 21 or older with photo ID. Mohegan Sun's Momentum terms set the same age and say membership is free.

For the operator, the program is the record of who played, how long and at what stakes. MGM Resorts calls MGM Rewards a vital tool for capturing guest preferences in its 2025 annual report.

How do tier credits, reward points and comps work?

Most programs run two ledgers. Tier credits measure play over a set period and then reset. Boyd Rewards says its tier credits have no value, and Unity by Hard Rock says they cannot be redeemed. The spendable currency is the second ledger.

Slot play is easy to rate because the machine counts every dollar. Caesars Rewards gives 1 tier credit and 1 Reward Credit for each $5 played on a reel slot. At a casino, 200 Reward Credits buy $1 of free play (Caesars earn and redeem page). Boyd Rewards gives 1 Boyd Point per $1 of reel play and values 1,000 points at $1 (Boyd points page). Wynn Rewards gives 1 slot point per $5, and 500 points turn into $5 of free credit (Wynn Rewards).

Do the math and the posted rates are small. At Caesars and Boyd, $1,000 of reel slot play earns $1 of free play, or 0.1%. At Wynn, $2,500 earns $5, or 0.2%. Caesars says its slot win is usually 9% to 11% of slot handle (Caesars 10-K). So at Caesars, the base earn hands back about 1% of expected slot win. The rest of the spend comes through comps that hosts and marketers choose to give.

How do operators rate table play?

A person rates table play. Wynn's terms base tier credits and comp dollars on average bet, type of game and length of play (Wynn Rewards terms). Caesars' rules say table credits rest on what its staff observe, and management's call on any dispute is final.

For illustration, a guest bets an average of $25 a hand at blackjack for three hours. Assume 60 hands an hour and a 1% house edge. The casino's expected win, often called theoretical win or theo, is $25 x 60 x 3 x 0.01 = $45. If a policy returns 30% of theo as comps, the session supports $13.50 of comps. Theo ignores whether the guest won or lost. The figures are assumptions.

How do major casino rewards programs compare?

Rows come from each program's own terms. Thresholds are tier credits or status points per period.

Three choices set these programs apart. First is the clock. Mohegan Sun counts status over six-month periods, so a member gets two chances a year (Momentum rewards page). Hard Rock lets a member keep status for the rest of the year plus 14 more months (Unity terms).

Second is expiry. A shorter clock means more points lapse unused, which raises breakage. Third is price by channel. Caesars sets 200 Reward Credits at $1 of casino free play, but 100 at $1 of online bonus cash. The tier strategy guide covers thresholds.

How are casino loyalty programs funded and accounted for?

The large US operators book comps and points alike. MGM Resorts sets the price of a wager as net win, the gap between gaming wins and losses (MGM 10-K). When a wager also earns points, MGM sets aside part of net win at the points' standalone selling price, less expected breakage. That part waits on the balance sheet until the guest redeems.

Comps work the same way. MGM, Wynn and Las Vegas Sands each move revenue to the room or meal at its standalone selling price (Wynn 10-K, Sands 10-K). Comps that outside firms supply are an operating expense. What is left is casino revenue.

So comps show up as hotel and restaurant revenue, and casino revenue drops by the same amount. Caesars says its 2025 revenue included $1.3 billion of comps and point redemptions, against net revenues of $11.49 billion (Caesars 10-K). That is about 11%. Boyd put the retail value of its comps and point redemptions at $210.3 million for 2025, mostly food and beverage (Boyd 10-K).

The Caesars 10-K adds three details a CFO will know. It prices a Reward Credit from what members redeemed for over the prior year. It books breakage in step with redemptions. It treats tier discounts as not material rights, so they get no separate deferral. It also carries Caesars Rewards as a $523 million intangible asset. Boyd's filing shows why enrollment matters. A wager by a member has two performance obligations, and a wager by a guest outside the program has one.

The table shows each firm's own loyalty liability line. The balances are small next to the comp totals. MGM, Caesars, Sands and Wynn expect them to become revenue, as a rule within a year. Wynn's line also holds unused comps, so compare each firm with itself. MGM and Sands take a partner redemption off the liability and pay the partner. The points liability guide and the partner settlement guide cover the entries.

How do partner ecosystems and status matches work across operators?

Casino programs reach past the resort. Caesars Rewards members also earn through a Visa card and Wyndham Rewards (Caesars partners page). Wynn Rewards offers MSC Cruises benefits to all tiers. Boyd Rewards gives its top three tiers a Holland America Line cruise benefit.

A status match gives a member a tier in a partner program, based on status already earned. Caesars matches its Platinum members to Wyndham Platinum. Its Diamond and Seven Stars members get Wyndham Diamond (Caesars and Wyndham terms). MGM Rewards Pearl members link to Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite. Gold and Platinum get Gold Elite, and NOIR gets Ambassador Elite (MGM Collection FAQ).

The partner terms share guardrails worth copying:

  • Earned status only. Wyndham members can match into Caesars only with status earned through hotel stays. Status from a credit card does not count.
  • No chained matches. Caesars will not match a Wyndham member who got that status from another match.
  • A yearly reset. Caesars members must reapply each year from February 1.
  • Transfers earn no tier credit. Caesars and Wyndham move points 1 to 1, up to 30,000 a year.
  • One-way matching. MGM Rewards status flows into Marriott Bonvoy, and Marriott status does not flow back.
  • A spread on every swap. MGM and Marriott convert points at 10 to 8 both ways, capped at 30,000 a year.

A member who sends 10,000 MGM Rewards Points to Marriott gets 8,000. Sending them back yields 6,400, so a round trip costs 36%. Wynn shows a local version. A tier match won through an Encore Boston Harbor promotion is valid there, but not in Las Vegas (Wynn terms). See the ecosystem loyalty guide for shared currencies.

Which responsible gaming rules apply to casino rewards?

Regulators treat the rewards club as a marketing channel, so exclusion rules reach it. New Jersey requires casinos to deny player club membership and comps to anyone on the self-exclusion list (N.J.A.C. 13:69G-2.4). Those people must get no targeted mailings or player club materials. The state's definition of a targeted mailing names rewards club membership as one of the triggers.

In Nevada, Regulation 5.170 covers any licensee that mails offers to gamble (Nevada Regulation 5). It must let patrons cut off that mail and other direct marketing. The patron then reports any such offer to a named office within 10 days. Indiana goes further. A person who joins its exclusion program forfeits points and comps earned before, unless they can be cashed (68 IAC 6-3-2).

The industry's own code sets a floor. The American Gaming Association code says members must let a patron give up club perks, comps and promos in writing (AGA code, September 2025). It bars ads that call gaming risk-free or a fix for money problems. Its 2025 guide says states including Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and North Carolina now require data and automatic triggers to spot problem play (AGA guide).

Program terms pass these duties on. Caesars makes excluded people ineligible. Wynn bars self-excluded people for the term of their exclusion. MGM runs its GameSense program from the MGM Rewards Desk. So exclusion status is a field the system checks before any offer or redemption.

How should operators use player data and personalization?

The rewards database sits at the center of casino marketing. MGM sorts customers by taste, habit and value. It then shapes offers for each tier (MGM 10-K). Caesars uses member data in mail, email, websites, phones, social media and slot machines (Caesars 10-K). Caesars added a wallet in 2025 that holds funds and Caesars Rewards together. Boyd links its BoydPay cashless wallet to the Boyd Rewards card (Boyd 10-K).

That value makes the database a target. In September 2023, Caesars said an attacker took a copy of its loyalty database. The way in was a social engineering attack on an outside IT support vendor. The data held driver's license or Social Security numbers for a large number of members. Caesars also warns that privacy laws can limit how it markets to customers (Caesars 10-K).

Give vendors the least access the job needs. Feed problem play triggers from the same data that feeds offers, so one record serves both. The personalization guide covers models and tests.

How do casinos stop fraud and comp abuse?

Staff hand out comps, so the controls start with who can grant them. The federal rule for tribal casinos, 25 CFR 542.17, requires written steps to approve and track comps (25 CFR 542.17). The steps set each employee's limits, including limits based on ties between the giver and the guest. Each month, staff who cannot give or get comps list every comp worth $100 or more. Internal audit or accounting reviews that list monthly.

Program terms close the gaps members find. These clauses come from the rules of Wynn and Caesars:

  • One account per person. Wynn can delete a second account and take back what it earned.
  • No pooling. Wynn has barred linking one member's account to another's since July 31, 2021.
  • No earning on free play. Caesars gives no credits on free play, and Wynn gives no slot points on free credit.
  • Daily caps. Wynn caps conversions at $25,000 of free credit a day and use at $150,000 a day.

Money laundering rules reach the same data. FinCEN requires each casino to use all the data it has to find transactions it must report (31 CFR 1021.210). A casino with computer systems must use automated checks to help. Rated play and redemption logs belong in that review. The loyalty fraud guide covers detection.

How do you measure a casino loyalty program?

None of the five 10-Ks reports a member count or a program return, so build your own set:

  • Rated share. The share of slot play and table drop recorded on a card.
  • Reinvestment rate. Comps, redemptions and free play as a share of theo, by tier.
  • Lift. Trips and theo for members who got an offer, against a holdout group.
  • Tier retention. The share of each tier that requalifies.
  • Liability and breakage. The year-end balance and the split of redemptions with partners.
  • Exclusion checks. Offers sent to excluded people. The target is zero.
  • Control exceptions. Manual credit changes by employee and comps over the review limit.

Read the liability line each quarter. A rising balance with flat redemptions means members hold currency they do not value. The loyalty KPI guide defines the wider set.

How GRAVTY handles casino loyalty programs

GRAVTY is the Loyalty Juggernaut loyalty platform. Tiers, statuses and currencies are set up as models on one engine. So a tier credit track and a spendable currency run side by side. Loyalty managers write earn, burn, tier and bonus rules in the patented Visual Rules engine, then simulate and deploy them.

AI-Trust flags odd earning and redemption as it happens. Member 360 gives one view of each customer, household included. Deutsche Telekom runs one program on GRAVTY with 4,500 partners in 9 countries. GRAVTY runs 500M+ members in production, with a 99.99% uptime SLA and average API latency under 50 ms. It has 150+ system integrations. See the technology page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to join a casino rewards program?

Yes, at programs that state it in their terms, such as Caesars Rewards and Mohegan Sun's Momentum. Members must be 21 or older and show photo ID to enroll or redeem. Wynn Rewards asks new members to finish enrollment in person at a Wynn Rewards desk.

Do casino reward points expire?

Yes. Every program in the comparison table lets its spendable currency lapse after a stretch with no activity. Caesars Reward Credits expire if a member earns none for six months. Boyd Points and Unity Points lapse after six months of inactivity, and Momentum Dollars after 12 months.

What happens to casino status at the end of the year?

Status is recalculated from the credits earned in the period that just ended. Caesars and Boyd reset tier credits on January 1. Wynn's new tier runs from February 1 and Hard Rock's from March 1. Mohegan Sun resets every six months.

Can a self-excluded person keep a players club card?

No, not in New Jersey, and not at Caesars Rewards or Wynn Rewards. New Jersey requires casinos to deny player club membership and comps to self-excluded people. Hard Rock bars them only at the location or state where they excluded themselves.

What is a casino status match?

A status match grants a member of one program a tier in another, based on status already earned. Caesars Rewards Platinum members can match to Wyndham Rewards Platinum. MGM Rewards members at Pearl and above can link to Marriott Bonvoy elite status.

Why do casinos report comps as revenue?

Casinos report comps as revenue because the comp is part of what the wager paid for. Operators allocate part of net win to the room or meal at its standalone selling price. The rest stays as casino revenue, so the comp moves revenue from the casino to the hotel or restaurant.
