DR is usually done in traditional enterprises where one data center is brought down and the Enterprise Application is required to switch to second data center. This is done typically on quarterly schedule. Any issues found during the process are fixed and the process is repeated again next quarter. DR process protects against disaster striking a data center where man made or natural.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO): The recovery time objective (RTO) is the targeted duration of time and a service level within which a business process must be restored after adisaster(or disruption) in order to avoid unacceptable consequences associated with a break in business continuity.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO): A Recovery Point Objective(RPO) is the maximum targeted period in which data (transactions) might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident.
Automated DR: GRAVTY currently runs across multiple availability zones (AZ or data centers). GRAVTY can with stand failure in component in single AZ and will automatically switch to using the same component from other AZ. This protects it against incidents in single AZ. As such, GRAVTY is DR ready for AZ failures. For automated DR, RTO is zero and RPO is zero.
Automated DR Testing: Instead of doing a formal DR every quarter which is too infrequent, the cloud has new term for this "Chaos Engineering" where the best defense against unexpected failures is to fail often. Chaos Engineering involves running thoughtful, planned experiments that teach us how our systems behave in the face of failure.
These experiments follow three steps:
LJI follows Chaos Engineering to implement DR program. To aide in Chaos Engineering, LJI uses Gremlin software. This helps it automatically do DR experiments on hosts, containers and server less in random, scheduled or guided manner.
Gremlin experiments are done regularly, most often before a release to make sure Availability is not compromised.
Manual DR : In cases where manual DR is necessary (multiple AZ are down), GRAVTY provides a RTO of 12 hours and RPO of 30 minutes.
